 (Also: (OED) ME ciser, cisar, ME cisere, cysar, cyser, cesare; ME seser, ME sychere, syser, 15–16 sicer, 16 sicere) An intoxicating liquor, strong drink. One modern incarnation is made from cider with mead. Known at least since the 'Cursor mundi' a Northumbrian poem of the 14th century; "He dranc neuer cisar ne wine." and "Mekil for right şan sal he suynk, And nouşer wyne ne seser drink.". As recently as 1609 the Douay translation of the bible gives (for I. Deut. xiv. 26) "Thou shalt buy..wine also and sicere."  www.lymebaywinery.co.uk  |
